Previous Topics in Sports Medicine:
- The Kansas Center for Athletic Medicine is pleased to announce that it
will be providing athletic training services to Eudora high School and Seabury Academy. The services are to be provided beginning immediately. The services provide athletic trainers to the school for the purpose of the evaluation and management of athletic injuries sustained by the school's student-athletes.
- The Kansas Center for Athletic Medicine has concluded it's third year of
the fall Saturday morning sports injury clinic. One Hundred and Forty
athletes were seen and provided valuable immediate evaluation and
treatment planning as a result. We would like to thank everyone
including parents and coaches for spreading the word, but mostly our
great staff in the front office, Sharon Moews, Kendee Schroder, and
Mickey Prager for the smoothest year yet. Also to Travis Haas our x-ray
technician for great work again!
- August 17th is the first day of fall sports practice for Kansas schools.
Lately we have been fortunate with cool and wet weather. Unfortuneatly,
this is not usually the case in mid-August. Athletes should be
preparing now by gradually exercising and conditioning gradually when
warm weather avails itself. Starting from scratch with 30 minutes in
warm weather and increasing daily by 10 minutes should help with those
first days of hot practice. Athletes should also begin to work on
hydrating themselves and modifying their diet by avoiding foods that
will prevent the absorption of water by the cells and organs that
require it.
Coaches should also begin preparing themselves by being well versed
in heat injury care and heat emergency measures.
- As the "Official Medical Partner of the Sunflower State Games", The
Kansas Center for Athletic Medicine will be providing certified athletic
trainers during the Games. The trainers while coordinating emergency
medicial care with the Douglass County EMS, will be available to
athletes, coaches, and parents to provide assessment, consultation, and
first aid for sports injuries. The trainers will also be available for
taping. Athletes needing taping will need to furnish their own taping
supplies.
The trainers will be based in Robinson gym, adjacent to the basketball
courts throughout the Games. Trainers will also be stationed full time
through the following events: rugby and wrestling. Otherwise trainers
will be traveling from site to site, available for consultation. Also,
State Games sit coordinators will be able to page a trainer to a site
upon request of an athlete, coach or parent.
Trainers working the games are: Jeremy Robbins ATC, Gary Stevanus ATC,
Darlene Lefert ATC, Lance Mullen ATC, Greg Evans ATC, Kelly Carlson AT,
Karen Polasceck AT, Chad Bowles ATC, Matt Humpert ATC, Jennifer Raybern
ATC, & Sonalee Patel AT. Trainers will be wearing shirts bearing the
KCAM logo. Feel free to call upon them for their assistance.

- The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons believes that the use of
breakaway bases at all levels of baseball & softball could dramatically
reduce injuries to athletes and therefore reduce associated medical
costs.
Many baseball and softball injuries occur when sliding into a base. A
study conducted at the University of Michigan found that using breakaway
bases in recreational softball reduced sliding injuries by 98% and
associated medical costs by 99%. The federal government has recommended
the use of breakaway bases on playing fields at military installations
and federal prisons.
Although the base can be dislodged by a sliding runner, the breakawy
base is stable and will not detach during normal base running.
- The Kansas Center for Athletic Medicine is pleased to announce that they
will now be providing athletic trainers at tournament events held at

Training Room Tips:
PRE-WRAP CHO-PAT
from Gary Stevanus ATC-R, Baldwin High School & Eudora High School
As a quick, cheap, and effective way to treat patellar tendonitis, all you need
is a little pre-wrap. Pre-wrap is the underling material used when taping areas
such as ankles. Apply the pre-wrap from about 3-4" above your knee down to just
below your knee. Roll it down until you have a little pre-wrap band. Then, roll
it up so it lies just below the kneecap and just above the tibial tubercle,
crossing the patellar tendon.
